The acclaimed French LGBTQ+ series Woke is back on Dekkoo with its second season, bringing Hicham, Thibaut and the activists of Lyon’s G-Spot LGBTQ+ center back for another chapter filled with friendship, desire, politics and the sometimes complicated realities of queer activism.
When we first meet Hicham in Season 1, he leaves his sheltered life and family behind and heads to Lyon in search of Thibaut — the only openly gay man he knows, and someone who once tried to kiss him.
Through Thibaut, Hicham is introduced to the G-Spot, a lively LGBTQ+ center and the group of activists who call it home. What begins as Hicham’s search for another person gradually becomes something much bigger: a journey toward understanding his sexuality, finding a community and figuring out who he wants to be.
A New Chapter for Hicham
Season 2 picks up after Hicham has stepped away from both Thibaut and the G-Spot.
Then he meets Elijah.
Hicham spots him one night at a bar but misses his chance to talk to him. With a little help from Bastien, however, the two eventually reconnect — opening the door to a new chapter in Hicham’s personal life.
At the same time, things at the G-Spot are becoming increasingly complicated.
Thibaut finds himself answering for his recent actions while the future of the center itself hangs in the balance. The activists also begin organizing a Pride march centered on trans rights, a decision that exposes disagreements both inside and outside the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride, Politics and a Community Divided
One of the things that makes Woke stand apart from a more traditional gay drama is its willingness to let its characters disagree.
Season 2 explores tensions surrounding trans rights, asylum and immigration, feminism, religion and LGBTQ+ politics without forgetting that these debates affect the lives of actual people.
The proposed Pride march becomes one of the season’s central storylines. Local LGBT bar owners push back against the decision to focus the march on trans rights, while the G-Spot itself faces accusations of transphobia from a trans collective.
Meanwhile, Kenza faces possible deportation, forcing Thibaut and the others to confront another urgent fight taking place within their community.
These conflicts put friendships, alliances and even the future of the G-Spot under pressure.
Still Haven’t Seen Season 1?
This is definitely a series worth watching from the beginning.
Season 1 introduces Hicham, Thibaut and the activists at the G-Spot while following Hicham as he begins embracing his sexuality and discovering a queer community for the first time.
And because the episodes are short, Woke is an especially easy series to binge.
