What begins as attraction quickly becomes something deeper, forcing Johan to reconsider not only what he wants from another person, but some of his assumptions about desire, masculinity and belonging.

From Sundance to Dekkoo
Sauna made its world premiere in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, introducing international audiences to director Mathias Broe’s feature debut.
Broe co-wrote the screenplay with William Lippert, adapting the novel by Danish author Mads Ananda Lodahl.
The Copenhagen setting is an essential part of the film. Gay bars, apartments, dating apps, parties and the Adonis sauna create a world where sexual freedom appears almost limitless. Yet Sauna gradually asks a more difficult question: Does having endless opportunities for sex necessarily make finding genuine intimacy any easier?
