Next week we’re bringing you a gay title direct from the biggest gay film festivals right into your living rooms! On February 15th get ready to be ‘Screwed’…

If the film sounds familiar that’s because right after Frameline (the oldest queer film festival in the world!) we here at Dekkoo made headlines by acquiring the film just for all of you right out of the jam-packed world premiere. We were so impressed by this audacious and sexy coming-of-age film that we just had to immediately grab it and make sure you all were the first to see it. That’s why it will be exclusively available on Dekkoo for a whole month before it hits DVD.

Elias & Miku

‘Screwed’ comes to us from the mind of Nils-Erik Ekblom – a filmmaker who decided to explore the life of a fairly normal gay teenager in Finland and what happens when he comes face to face with desires he decides he doesn’t want to run from. In interviews Nils has explained that he feels gay people aren’t portrayed authentically in Finnish cinema and that for years they’ve been the butt of jokes. He desired to create an accurate portrait of queer life here and now in Finnish culture. Indeed if you look up Finnish gay films you won’t find much of anything sadly. Now we know why ‘Tom of Finland’ wanted to come to California 🙂

Miku

Alright enough of the back-story! Let’s talk about the boys! Meet our cute main character – 17-year-old Miku. Jesus that name is adorable… Miku’s life is very static – you can absolutely tell something needs to change and this is the year that he takes some chances in life. A good way to start is by throwing a house party and losing his virginity his weird older brothers advises him. Thus Miku throws said party and thus his parent’s house nearly gets demolished in the teenage debauchery that ensues. Of course it’s bad enough to feel the wrath of his parents in general, but it’s even worse because they go on summer vacation immediately afterwards and he’s stuck in a small cabin with them!

Luckily there’s a surprise just down the river bend… No I’m not kidding. Literally a hot next door neighbor named Elias rows down the river and comes to introduce himself to Miku’s family. Once Elias sees Miku he’s very taken whereas Miku looks like he wants to run away as far as possible from the feelings that are coursing through him. It’s like watching someone in fight-or-flight mode. After the two finally start talking and taking little adventures in the countryside together it’s clear that they’re both in for a large dose of first love – with all the wonderful earth-shaking feelings it can produce. Of course ‘Screwed’ doesn’t just focus on the gay angle of life, it also rounds it out with sibling trouble, rocky marriages, and general family drama.

DEKKOO TAKES ALL DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS ON ‘SCREWED’ AT FRAMELINE

(New York, NY) June 22, 2017 – Gay streaming platform Dekkoo has acquired North American, UK and French DVD and VOD distribution rights to Nils-Erik Ekblom’s young adult drama “Screwed” (“Pihalla”).

The deal was negotiated shortly after the films’ capacity crowd premiere at Frameline, San Francisco’s International LGBT Film Festival, earlier this week. Terms were brokered by Dekkoo President Brian Sokel and Screwed director Nils-Erik Ekblom and producer, Tom Norrgrann.

Based on the personal experience of its young writer-filmmaker, Screwed is a distinctly sensual, beautifully shot, and sensitively acted drama about a young gay man’s sexual awakening amidst familiar turmoil set against the tranquil backdrop of the Finnish countryside.

“We are absolutely delighted to have the chance to distribute Screwed. It is truly an example of the resurgence of new Queer cinema at its most forward-thinking and affecting.” said Sokel.

Nils-Erik Ekblom said, “Only Dekkoo could offer us such unique home video distribution. As a streaming platform dedicated to gay cinema, Dekkoo is the perfect place for Screwed to instantly reach a passionate and dedicated audience. We’re absolutely thrilled we’ve been offered this opportunity.”

Screwed will be released day-and-date on the Dekkoo streaming platform and home video in the first quarter of 2018.

DEKKOO DISPATCH 003 – ‘CONCRETE NIGHT’

Title: Concrete Night

Director – Pirjo Honkasalo

Starring – Johannes Brotherus, Jari Virman, Anneli Karppinen, Juhan Ulfsak

Release Date – November 11, 2013

Today we bring you ‘Concrete Night‘, Finland’s entry for the 87th Academy Awards. A moving, lyrical, and stunning film constructed by an award winning cinematographer turned director, the film focuses on young Simo as he struggles to find his way in an otherworldly Helsinki surrounded by the presence of both good and evil influences.

The film is without question one of the most beautifully lensed black and white films in the past five years. As we watch Simo playfully fight with his brother, skinny dip with his best friend, and become lost in an amusement park we’re constantly moved by an unyielding camera eye that doesn’t back down from the goal of piercing Simo’s outer layers.

Kyle Turner, in a critical essay on ‘Concrete Night‘, had this to say about its style, ‘Other queer films, or even films with latently queer films, generally shy away from bleakness, trading it in for melodrama or comedy (unless you go the genre route). But Pirjo Honkasalo paints a search for self as a Kafka-esque nightmare, the landscapes of Helsinki reminiscent of the chiaroscuro in Orson Welles’ ‘The Trial’ and David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’. The harsh contrast between dark and light creates jagged little edges on every object in every frame, transforming a falling feather in the air recalling the prologue from Lars von Trier’s ‘Antichrist’ not a symbol of solace or safety, but something more sinister and duplicitous.’

If your internet is fast enough make sure to choose 1080p to see ‘Concrete Night‘ in all of its intended glory!
