Coming next week: A psychological coming-of-age film about the courage it takes to be oneself and the daunting fear blocking the way.

An unexpected love triangle develops in the romantic drama You and I

It’s summertime in Berlin. Jonas (Eric Klotzsch) is planning a trip through the little known area of the Uckermark, in preparation for a photography project. He invites his best friend, Phillip (George Taylor), to come along.

The two men haven’t seen one another since the time they spent together in London. So they pack up their Mercedes camper and take off across uncharted territory, stopping whenever they see something they like, taking pictures and generally enjoying a laid-back road trip.

The fact that Phillip is gay has never been an issue for either of them. When they pick up a hitchhiker named Boris (Michal Grabowski), however, who shows Jonas some interesting spots and starts to make moves on Phillip, the friendship of the two starts to fray. Maybe three’s a crowd after all? By the end of the summer, things between Jonas and Phillip won’t ever be the same again.

A sexy and bittersweet romantic drama, writer-director Nils Bökamp’s You and I is a stimulating, visually arresting romantic drama that tells a simple coming-of-age story, but packs in a lot of universal emotion.

Two childhood friends reunite as adults in the romantic Argentinian drama Esteros

Sexy and heartfelt, Esteros tells the story of two men who get a second chance at love.

Childhood friends Matías and Jerónimo (played at children by Joaquín Parada and Blas Finardi Niz and as adults by Ignacio Rogers and Esteban Masturini) reunite in their hometown of Paso de los Libres, Argentina, on the banks of the Uruguay River. The summer before high school, their friendship transformed into something deeper, but their mutual attraction never came to fruition.

More than a decade later they meet again, and the chemistry between them is palpable, but now Matías has a girlfriend who has traveled to his hometown for Carnival. Seeing his old friend, now so comfortable and confident, reawakens Matías’ feelings. This unexpected opportunity forces him to reassess his choices and to figure out whether he can turn his back on marriage in favor of the man he’s always loved.

A powerful film that elicits feelings of nostalgia for the forgotten romances from our past, Esteros offers a satisfying glimpse into what might have been (and what might still be).

The Prince is one of the year’s most explosively provocative films

The Prince is an explosive prison drama set in a repressive 1970s Chilean prison.

During a night of heavy drinking, Jaime (Juan Carlos Maldonado), a hot-tempered narcissist, suddenly stabs his best friend. He is sent to jail for murder and there, alone and afraid, he comes under the protection of a tough older inmate known as “The Stallion” (Alfredo Castro Gómez).

The unlikely pair begin a clandestine romance but violent power struggles inside the penitentiary threaten their bond.

This searing story of survival at all costs, takes its inspiration from Jean Genet’s Un Chant d’amour and Fassbinder’s Querelle in its affecting exploration of masculine aggression, conflicting loyalties and pent-up sexual desires.
