Director Frank Brittain’s 1970 queer Australian curio ‘The Set’ is now available on Dekkoo!

Though it’s now something of an obscure queer curio, the Australian drama The Set shocked and thrilled audiences during its initial release in 1970 with its uncommonly frank depictions of male nudity and gay sex.

Aiming for more than just titillation, the film challenged traditional notions of sexuality and gender while depicting a progressive Australia where same-sex relationships were considered equal.

Reeling from his girlfriend’s sexual past, aspiring artist Paul (Sean McEuan) runs off to Sydney in the hopes of attending school, but soon finds himself drawn into the sensual and seductive world of the local art scene.

Swimming through this utopia of flamboyant men, camp queens and fierce sissies, Paul quickly begins exploring his own sexuality.

Commissioned to work for a top stage director, he succumbs to the charms of the handsome Tony (Rod Mullinar) – who just happens to be going out with Paul’s cousin. Although love finds a way through this thorny predicament, things soon turn unexpectedly violent for the young aspiring artist.

Although a box office success in Australia at the time of its release, The Set was largely panned by critics and had fallen into obscurity for nearly 50 years. It’s now been digitally restored and is ready to shock and thrill a whole new generation of fans!

‘Wild Awakening’ is a deliciously campy erotic thriller about forbidden gay cowboy love

A deliciously erotic story of forbidden love from Spanish first-time director Joan Fermí Martí, Wild Awakening is equal parts family drama and campy gay soap opera.

The film stars Júlia Hernández as Emma and Fabián Castro as her gay brother Toni. Having inherited a business after the death of their parents, the siblings find themselves the unusually young proprietors of a horse ranch and riding school.

The land is populated almost entirely by buff, shirtless and extremely handsome male employees – all of whom are led by a homophobic taskmaster named Ramon (Richie Ormon). When both Emma and Toni start to develop feelings for Ramon’s son, Aaron (Christian Blanch), an unbelievably hunky Adonis, it sets the film’s conflict into motion.

Emma isn’t going to be pleased if Aaron turns out to be more interested in her brother. Equally concerned is the bigoted Ramon, who certainly doesn’t want to accept that his son may be gay.

Toni, known for having a promiscuous gay sex life, has a history of running away whenever things get too serious with a boyfriend. With Aaron, however, he may have finally found someone worth sticking around for.

Packed with some of the hottest Spanish men you’ll ever lay eyes on and dripping with sensuality, Wild Awakening is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

‘The Schoolmaster Games’ is a wildly original and deeply homoerotic high school melodrama

Based on a novel by Swedish author Kristofer Folkhammar and inspired by both American high school movies and gay porn, the unusual genre hybrid The Schoolmaster Games brings to life a vibrant alternate reality where sexuality is freely expressed, but manipulative power games are always at play just beneath the surface.

Desires are running wild at Saint Sebastian, a high school populated entirely by gay men. At this school, everyone is completely free to express their sexuality however they choose.

At the start of the year, much-desired heartthrob Charles (Christian Arnold) enters into a secret sexual power game orchestrated by the strict schoolmaster (Johan Ehn) – who is tortured by memories of his own repression during a time before the erotic acceptance that currently prevails at the school.

When the competition for the prestigious “Winter Procession” tightens, friendships crack and their whole utopian existence begins to fall apart piece by piece.

From Swedish director Ylva Forner, The Schoolmaster Games is a colorful, original and thrillingly homoerotic high school melodrama like no film ever before.

Visionary director João Pedro Rodrigues returns with the stylish genre-hybrid ‘Will-O’-the-Wisp’

From visionary queer auteur João Pedro Rodrigues, the acclaimed Portuguese director behind the The Ornothologist and the provocative gay classic O Fantasma, comes a bold and wildly unpredictable new musical fantasia.

Beginning in the year 2069, Will-O’-the-Wisp follows Portugal’s fictional King Alfredo, who, on his deathbed, starts to recall the social activism and erotic exploits of his youth in the early years of the 21st century.

As a fresh-faced, curly-haired young prince played by Mauro Costa, Alfredo shocked his riotously wealthy royal family by deciding to become a volunteer firefighter –in part to serve his community, but also as an excuse to be surrounded by a bevy of hot, beefy fellow firemen.

When he meets Alfonso (André Cabral), an alluring young instructor, new possibilities open and the pair become deeply immersed in their desire for one another.

This sexually-frank new film – a heady mix of historical tableau, musical comedy, queer romance and post-colonial provocation – maintains a joyous energy while examining heavy themes. Rodrigues manages to confront the inherited ills of our modern day while also indulging in delightfully bawdy humor and plenty of song-and-dance flights of fancy.

Take a trip back to the ’80s with the hilarious high school drag comedy ‘First Period’

Featuring an impressive ensemble – which includes many sketch and improv ringers who got their start at The Groundlings in Los Angeles – First Period is a hilarious, candy-colored drag tribute to 1980s teen comedies… and the films of John Hughes in particular.

Cassie Glen (Brandon Alexander III), a new girl at school, arrives with the goal of finding a hunky boyfriend and finally becoming popular. Running afoul of the school’s top-tier mean girls, she decides to befriend Maggie (Dudley Beene), a social outcast and sometimes literal coat rack.

Together, these two new besties become convinced that the best way to reach their goal of becoming popular is to enter – and win – the annual talent show and steal the bitchy girls’ himbo boyfriends along the way.

Writer-director Charlie Vaughn did his ‘80s movie homework, tipping a hat to iconic flicks like Pretty in Pink and lesser-known cult favorites like Teen Witch while adding a dash of Romy and Michelle for good measure. The result is campy, funny and often surprisingly poignant as it delivers the tried and true message that being yourself is always the best course of action.

Don’t miss the delightfully insane (and insanely funny) new queer comedy series ‘Marque and Hector’

We’ve seen generations of cisgender men playing trans women in media. Maybe it’s time we flip the script and let a trans woman play a cisgender man for once!

Welcome to the hilarious world of Marque and Hector, a brand-new, hysterically funny web series in which gender norms have been torn to shreds and put together ass-backwards.

Joslyn DeFreece stars as Marque, an aging gay queen who is thirsty for YouTube fame and enlists the help of his dumb-as-a-bucket houseboy Hector (played by Linus Ignatius) in his mission to conquer the interwebs.

Woefully stupid, but gifted with a heart of gold, Hector proudly serves as Marque’s Vanna White, his magician’s assistant and his punching bag. The only problem? Marque bungles everything he touches — including his hopes and dreams.

In an age where representation is so sensitive and some productions feel like they’re only allowed to portray LGBTQ+ characters in a heroic light, this joyously demented comedy series is here to remind everyone that trans, queer and gender-noncomforming people are still allowed to be funny as hell!

‘Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe’ is a colorful and confrontational new comedy classic

Why be normal when you can be extraordinarily fabulous? That’s the question posed by Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe, a wildly funny, proudly over-the-top new indie comedy from writer-director Harvey Rabbit.

The film tells a kinky comic book-inspired story that would have the superheroes of Marvel clutching their pearls. Rodrigo Garcia Alves stars as Father Gaylord, a conflicted young priest who is hell bent on denying his homosexuality… but isn’t very good at it.

Meanwhile, his supernaturally powerful alien ex-lover, Queen Bitch (Bishop Black), is hatching a plan to turn the entire Earth gay. The repressed priest turns to superhero Captain Faggotron (Tchivett) for help, but the caped crusader finds himself highly conflicted. Clashing ideologies culminate in an orgy of gay demons… and a love that no longer has to hide.

Taking inspiration from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the films of John Waters and Bruce LaBruce, this brazenly queer, subversively political new film was conceived in response to anti-gay attitudes around the world and uses camp as a tool of joyful resistance, confronting heteronormative structures with humor, garish glamour and a whole lot of attitude.
