Short Film Spotlight: Dogfriend

An intelligent and wickedly funny 18-minute short from Germany, Dogfriend follows a kinky hook-up that gets incredibly heated… just not for the reasons you might expect.

Screenwriter Lamin Leroy Gibba also stars in the film as Malik, an attractive young man of color who is anticipating the arrival of Phillip (Til Schindler), a newer, unmistakably white and ambiguously political lover.

A classic over-thinker, Malik isn’t sure that this new relationship has legs. Phillip has a confident and casual demeanor that often conflicts with Malik’s neuroses. When Phillip finally arrives, presenting a pair of handcuffs and asking Malik to dominate him, the night takes a wildly unexpected turn.

Malik cuffs Phillip to the bed, but can’t seem to locate the key. Once the men find themselves discussing race relations, Malik starts to realize that he finally has the upper hand and Phillip, flush with white privilege, finds himself more vulnerable than ever before.

Short Film Spotlight: The Least Untrue

From writer-director Gabriel Shanks, The Least Untrue is a 15-minute drama about two gay men who meet under very unusual circumstances.

Nicholas Michaels stars as Caleb, a young guy with “closeted movie star” good looks who is headed to his boyfriend Ben’s apartment. As Ben is gone, picking up take-out for the two of them, Caleb lets himself inside using a spare key from under the doormat.

He gets a major surprise when the next person to walk through the door is not Ben, but Ethan… Ben’s husband, played by Nathanial P. Claridad.

Realizing they’ve both been duped by the same man, the pair begin to stew in the awkward and sometimes hostile energy of the room. After sharing some basic information – and a violent revenge fantasy involving a particularly spiky paperweight – they begin to discuss Ben’s weakness for good kissers… and that’s when things take an even more unexpected turn.

Short Film Spotlight: All the Awards I Never Gave You

A 16-minute short film from director Caio Scot and screenwriters Lucas Drummond and Mel Carvalho, All the Awards I Never Gave You takes place entirely in one public restroom during a prestigious awards ceremony in Brazil.

Lucas Drummond and Matheus Campos star in the film as two young actors on the rise. When they unexpectedly reunite in the bathroom, they find that their feelings for one another are far from resolved.

The two promising young men soon try to come to some kind of an understanding while struggling with the fact that they’re forced to keep their relationship a secret from the public and the film industry that employs them.

Scot, Drummond and Carvalho’s previous short film, 2019’s After That Party earned the trio a great reputation on the international film festival circuit – screening at over 60 different events and picking up nine different awards.

Short Film Spotlight: A Pipe Dream

Plans for a casual Grindr hook-up go horribly wrong in A Pipe Dream, a unabashedly scatological 8-minute comedy from writer-director-star Ethan Wayne Smith.

The film follows an attractive young student (Smith) living in a cramped New York apartment with a very messy, nightmare roommate.

After making plans to meet up with a charming top from his past, he rushes off to their shared-space bathroom to prepare – not expecting to be thwarted at every turn by unfortunate happenstance.

Not for the squeamish, A Pipe Dream will make you laugh while you squirm in your seat.

Short Film Spotlight: The Carer

A touching 15-minute short film from writer-director Christine Parker, The Carer stars veteran British character actor Peter Eyre as Ari, a sophisticated and urbane gay man who moves into an elder care facility and encounters Beau, played by Barney Glover.

Beau, an exceptionally handsome a former thief, is in the process of straightening his life out and has now been put in charge of Ari’s day-to-day care. Their unlikely meeting changes both men in profound ways – forcing Ari, who recently lost his long-term partner, to examine the tenderness of his past while Beau looks toward the possibility of a brighter future.

Examining a uniquely intimate professional relationship, The Carer is equally heartwarming and heartbreaking.
