Fernando is spending his vacation at a country house in Ezeiza, outside Buenos Aires, surrounded by a close-knit group of male friends.

The days are deliberately uncomplicated: swimming, drinking, smoking, talking and lounging around the house and pool. Away from their everyday responsibilities, the friends settle into the easy intimacy that comes from knowing one another for years.

But this time, Fernando has invited someone new.

Germán, a friend from his taekwondo class, joins the group for the vacation. What Fernando doesn’t know is that Germán is gay.

As the long summer days unfold, something begins developing between the two men. Glances last a little longer. Physical proximity takes on another meaning. Ordinary moments suddenly seem charged with possibilities neither man is quite prepared to acknowledge.

Taekwondo turns that uncertainty into the heart of the film.

The Art of the Slow Burn

Anyone familiar with the films of Marco Berger will recognize the territory.

A Summer That Takes an Unexpected Turn

Sixteen-year-old Najib isn’t exactly planning an adventurous summer.

Reserved and mostly keeping to himself, he spends his days immersed in a video game. Then his mother, Asma, tells him that their elderly Algerian neighbor has died alone.

Najib becomes curious about the man who had been living so close to him, yet remained largely a stranger.

He secretly takes the keys to the neighbor’s apartment and begins exploring what was left behind. Inside, Najib finds photographs, letters, diaries, VHS tapes, and pieces of a life he never knew existed.

What begins almost like an act of teenage trespassing gradually becomes something much more meaningful.

Discovering a Life Through What Remains

One of the most interesting things about Oceania is how little it needs to explain outright.

As Najib moves deeper into the apartment, he begins piecing together fragments of his neighbor’s past, including his loves, losses, political history, and connections to another generation.

The apartment becomes almost like an archive.

For Najib, discovering that history also becomes a way of looking at himself differently. The experiences of someone from an earlier generation begin intersecting with a teenager who is still figuring out his own place in the world.

It’s a simple idea, but Oceania gives it room to breathe.

Rather than turning Najib’s discoveries into a conventional mystery, Noujaïm lets photographs, recordings, objects, silence, and atmosphere do much of the storytelling.

A Film About Remembering

Memory runs through much of Valentin Noujaïm’s work, particularly the idea of people and communities disappearing from the histories we preserve.

That makes Oceania feel like more than a coming-of-age film.

It’s also about what happens when younger queer people encounter the lives of those who came before them.

The people, relationships, struggles, and private moments of an earlier generation can easily disappear unless someone finds them, remembers them, and carries some part of them forward.

Noujaïm has described Oceania as an ode to tenderness and to a new generation that remembers earlier struggles while continuing to move forward.

That idea sits quietly at the center of the film.

Najib may enter the apartment because he’s curious. What he leaves with is something much harder to define.

Meet Filmmaker Valentin Noujaïm

Born in France to Lebanese and Egyptian parents, Valentin Noujaïm studied screenwriting at La Fémis in Paris.

His work frequently explores memory, disappearance, marginalized communities, identity, and the traces people leave behind.

His previous films include Pacific Club, which explores the largely forgotten history of a Paris nightclub created for Arabs from the city’s suburbs. His work has appeared at international film festivals including Rotterdam, BlackStar, BAFICI, and DocLisboa.

With Oceania, Noujaïm brings many of those larger ideas about memory and history into a surprisingly intimate story about a teenager opening the door to someone else’s apartment and discovering an entire life on the other side.

A Small Film With a Much Bigger World Inside It

At just 24 minutes, Oceania doesn’t overstay its welcome.

It’s thoughtful without becoming heavy-handed, mysterious without needing to explain everything, and emotional without forcing the audience toward a particular reaction.

There’s also something especially fitting about discovering a film like this as a short. Queer short films have long given filmmakers room to tell stories and explore characters that might struggle to find space in more conventional feature filmmaking.

One of the most refreshing things about Youssou & Malek is what the film doesn’t make the center of its story.

Youssou and Malek are in love.

Their relationship isn’t treated as something that needs to be justified, explained, or turned into a problem simply because they’re two young men. Instead, their dilemma is one that has confronted lovers forever: What happens when love and the future begin pulling you in different directions?

That was important to director Simon Frenay.

Speaking about the film, Frenay has explained that he wanted to create the kind of positive gay representation he wished he’d been able to see when he was younger. Rather than building the story around shame, he imagined the romantic experience he wished he’d had as a young gay man.

The result is a story in which queer love is allowed to be exactly that: love.

And that seemingly simple choice makes Youssou & Malek feel surprisingly special.

When a Gay Romance Becomes a Musical

There’s another surprise waiting for viewers.

Youssou & Malek is also a musical.

Rather than treating the musical sequences as something separate from the story, Frenay uses music, movement, and a kind of Greek chorus to express emotions that Youssou and Malek sometimes struggle to put into words.

The heightened style gives their romance an almost fairy-tale quality.

Frenay has spoken about deliberately moving away from the gritty visual language often used to portray life in France’s suburban neighborhoods. Working with cinematographer Julien Saez, he instead wanted the film to become increasingly poetic and romantic as Youssou and Malek’s story unfolds.

That approach gives the film an identity all its own.

One moment feels intimate and natural. The next allows music and fantasy to take over.

For a story about first love — when every feeling can seem enormous — it feels entirely appropriate.
