Get seduced by the erotic, mystical queer allegory and stoner comedy ‘A Dim Valley’

Young actors Whitmer Thomas and Zach Weintraub star in A Dim Valley as ecology grad students Albert and Ian.

The pair are spending the summer collecting samples with their curmudgeonly advisor played by ‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ star Robert Longstreet. At his woodsy cabin along the Appalachian Trail, close quarters foster comical friction and unexpected bonds between the two young men.

When three mysterious, enigmatic female backpackers (played by Rachel McKeon, Feathers Wise and Rosalie Lowe) crash into their lives, they push the men to open up to one another… and their true feelings and desires soon begin to deepen.

A clever new indie gem from writer-director Brandon Colvin, A Dim Valley is partly a queer allegory, partly a hilarious stoner comedy and partly a transcendental meditation on mysticism and love.

Short Film Spotlight: Hotter Up Close

Screenwriter and star Christopher Matias Aguila delivers a heartwarming and hysterically funny lead performance in the delightful 15-minute comedy Hotter Up Close.

He plays Chris, a barista who is nursing his wounds after a recent break-up and feeling some apprehension on the eve of his 30th birthday. His self-esteem takes a nose dive after an awkward encounter with Aiden, a hunky coffee shop customer and distant Facebook friend played by Francisco San Martin.

But when Aiden invites Chris and his plucky best friend Dana (played by a scene-stealing Liz Jenkins) to a gay pool party, he gets an unexpected opportunity to show off his new swimming trunks and, just possibly, win over the man of his dreams. He’ll just need to learn to accept the fact that sometimes ‘awkward’ can be ‘cute.’

Packed with quotable dialog and hilarious supporting performances, Hotter Up Close is a winning short rom-com that we only wish was longer. We’ll just have to wait to see what Aguila and director Leland Montgomery have in store for us next.

Director Marco Berger explores toxic masculinity and homoerotic tension in ‘Horseplay’

During a scorching Argentine holiday, a group of male friends get together at a luxury villa. They drink, party hard, make videos together… and begin to test one another’s boundaries. A rare mix of homophobia and horseplay come together to create a wildly homoerotic atmosphere.

A twisted triangle of friends – a repressed gay man, a secret bisexual boy and a complete homophobe – will push the simmering tensions to their breaking point.

Prolific writer-director Marco Berger, the award-winning filmmaker behind Taekwondo, Hawaii, Young Hunter and The Blonde One, expertly amplifies the homoerotic undercurrents of male friendships – exploring his characters’ toned physiques as much as their inner thoughts.

While the surface of Horseplay has a wealth of eye-candy, the film also offers an intelligent and challenging critique of masculinity in its most toxic and dangerous form.

Two lovers face a difficult decision in the romantic drama ‘A Place to Be’

Writer-director Tadeo Garcia followed up his 2004 debut feature On the Downlow with A Place to Be, a powerful love story set against the backdrop of the U.S. immigration system.

Both Abel (Nelson A. Rodriguez), who works in Chicago in social services, and Diego (Andrew L. Saenz), an auto mechanic, have waited a long time to fall in love with the right person.

After several chance meetings, the two hook up and quickly fall for one another. But Diego has been hiding a secret: he’s an undocumented immigrant and his repeated attempts to attain citizenship have led nowhere.

When word reaches him that his mother is dying, Diego must decide whether or not to risk a trip back to Mexico, knowing he will jeopardize his chances of returning to America… and building a future with Abel. Can their love survive this dangerous decision?

Emotional and poignant, A Place to Be tells a moving story about the power of love during uncertain times.

Short Film Spotlight: After

An 18-minute tearjerker from writer-director Christian Walsh, After follows a couple whose once perfect relationship is turned upside-down as they deal with the loss of their daughter in opposite and conflicting ways.

The film begins in 1998, using home videos that introduce us to loving partners Riley and Calvin (Adrian Anchondo and Dylan Wayne Lawrence). Their already happy life is made greater by the arrival of their adopted daughter.

When we jump forward in time, we realize that the pair have suffered a tragic loss – and that their different ways of grieving have caused a tension between them that never existed before.

Both men understand that they will have to find some way to move forward, but it’s not clear whether or not they’ll be able to do it together.

Profoundly emotional, After shows how the sadness of grief is a testament to how much you loved and an opportunity to appreciate the people in your life even more.

Director Bertrand Mandico offers up a visually stunning queer allegory with ‘The Wild Boys’

The Wild Boys, the debut feature from prolific French short film director Bertrand Mandico, is ready to blow your mind.

Set on a small island at the beginning of the 20th century, the film tells the tale of five adolescent boys (all played by female-identifying actresses) who come from wealthy families, but find themselves increasingly drawn to the occult.

Looking to explore lives of crime and transgression, the group collectively commits a brutal crime – aided by ‘Trevor,’ a strange deity of chaos they can’t seem to control.

The boys are soon punished, forced to board a boat with a lecherous sea captain who is hell-bent on taming their ferocious appetites. They arrive on a lush island where dangers and pleasures abound… and the boys start to transform in both mind and body.

Gorgeously shot on 16mm and brimming with homoeroticism, genderfluidity and sly, subversive humor, The Wild Boys will take you on a heady, hedonistic journey you won’t soon forget. It’s a colorful, unique and strangely funny underground queer masterpiece.

Short Film Spotlight: Vermont

Desires shift after a trip to the mountains in the kaleidoscopic 20-minute short Vermont.

Ryan McDermott, making his acting debut, stars as a young man who, having recently returned from a winter trip to the mountains, drifts through New York City – contemplating an unseen landscape and exploring liaisons with various men.

The film also features a number of other non-actors who make up an ever-shifting ensemble cast of mostly queer men.

Shot on 16mm by cinematographer Robert Orlowski and set to a piano and flute score composed by Cody Boyce, Vermont is heavy on style and atmosphere. It feels like a mysterious and contemplative lost indie from the 1970s heyday of underground New York cinema. We can’t wait to see what writer-director Joseph Barglowski gets up to next.

‘In the Room Where He Waits’ comes to Dekkoo just in time for Halloween!

Set sometime during the earlier days of the pandemic, In the Room Where He Waits is a queer psychological horror film that uses isolation to its advantage.

Daniel Monks stars at Tobin Wade, an up-and-coming theatre actor who is about to have his first major break on Broadway in a production of ‘The Glass Menagerie.’ His plans change, however, when he learns of his father’s recent passing and is forced to return home to Australia for the funeral.

Stuck in a Brisbane hotel room while he waits out his two-week quarantine, Tobin begins to unravel. He’s not ready to confront a past he thought he’d long ago left behind. Things take an even darker turn when he begins to notice traces of another person in his room.

Soon, the hotel’s dark past and Tobin’s own repressions coalesce, manifesting in a malignant force that only grows stronger with each passing night.

The feature-length debut of short film director Timothy Despina Marshall, In the Room Where He Waits is a clever and stylishly-crafted exploration of grief, identity and the supernatural.

Andrea Riseborough and Demi Moore star in the wild queer pastiche ‘Please Baby Please’

Andrea Riseborough, Harry Melling and Demi Moore star in this neon-lit fantasia about newlyweds who find themselves on diverging sexual journeys.

A wildly inventive and wickedly funny 1950s pastiche from acclaimed filmmaker Amanda Kramer, Please Baby Please follows Arthur and Suze, two seemingly straight arrows who live an outwardly traditional lifestyle as the Lower East Side’s most bohemian Eisenhower-era couple.

The pair find their cage rattled when they witness a murder and become the new targets of a gang of sadistic, leather-clad greasers known as ‘The Young Gents.’ Their initial thrust of fear soon evolves, arousing previously unsuspected emotions and feelings of sexuality in both of the young lovers.

This sudden exposure to flamboyant masculinity unlocks the realization that Suze is an aspiring leather daddy who mistook herself for a housewife. Meanwhile, the perpetually sensitive Arthur’s obsessive gender trouble goes sideways when ‘Young Gent’ Teddy sparks his dormant queer desires.

Please Baby Please presents a full spectrum of underground fetishism and seductive musical asides, along with delicious cameos from Karl Glusman and Cole Escola. Visionary filmmaker Amanda Kramer pegs the hetero hell-scape of the 1950s in a witty, syncopated riff that plays like a high camp emission from your wildest dreams – bathed in silk, sweat and bisexual lighting!

Short Film Spotlight: Before You Go

The 14-minute short Before You Go follows Daniel (Nícola Vilander) and his best friend Franco (Joaquín Batarce), who are on a camping trip together at a remote lake in Patagonia.

When their backpack and tent fall down a cliff, they’re forced to seek shelter during a storm. Finding an unoccupied cabin, they decide to break a window and trespass inside.

Alone together in the house, they begin to celebrate their last days together before going their separate ways for college. Daniel is yet to come clean about his feelings for Franco, but as their time together comes to a close and their trip takes more than a few harrowing turns, the true nature of their feelings will be brought to the fore.

Beautifully crafted by co-directors Vicente del Río Laya and Hans von Marées Pededeand and packed with subtle emotion and sexual tension, Before You Go is a bittersweet coming-of-age short about the early romantic infatuations that linger.
