The Summer With Carmen Is a Sexy, Sun-Soaked Celebration of Gay Friendship

What do you get when you combine two gay best friends, an Athens nudist beach, a complicated breakup and an adorable little dog? You get The Summer With Carmen, a playful Greek comedy that turns the familiar rules of filmmaking—and gay relationships—inside out.

Directed by Zacharias Mavroeidis, The Summer With Carmen is warm, funny, uninhibited and knowingly self-aware. It’s a movie about trying to write a movie, but beneath its clever structure is an affectionate story about friendship, intimacy and the messy process of figuring out what—or who—really matters.

Demosthenes and Nikitas relaxing on a queer beach near Athens in The Summer With Carmen

A Gay Summer in Athens

The story begins on a beautiful queer beach outside Athens, where best friends Demosthenes and Nikitas are enjoying the sun, watching the men around them and trying to come up with an idea for a screenplay.

Their inspiration eventually comes from Demosthenes’ own life. Two summers earlier, he remained in Athens because of his father’s declining health. While there, he reconnected with his ex-boyfriend Panos, who had recently adopted a small dog named Carmen.

Panos quickly discovers that caring for a dog is more responsibility than he anticipated. Demosthenes takes over Carmen’s care, but the arrangement brings him back into the emotional orbit of his former relationship. As Demosthenes and Nikitas turn those experiences into a screenplay, memories, embellishments and movie conventions begin to overlap.

The resulting story moves between the friends’ present-day conversation on the beach and the romantic complications of that earlier summer. Viewers drawn to its tender and complicated relationships can find more stories like it in Dekkoo’s collection of gay romance movies.

A Movie About Making a Gay Movie

One of the pleasures of The Summer With Carmen is the way it plays with the conventions of storytelling.

Demosthenes and Nikitas attempt to shape real life into a traditional screenplay, complete with acts, turning points and a hero who is supposed to change. The trouble is that real people rarely behave as neatly as characters in a screenwriting manual.

Who is the hero of their story? What does he want? Has he actually learned anything? And how much can two friends revise the past before it becomes fiction?

These questions give the movie its inventive structure, but they never overwhelm its humor or humanity. The film remains breezy and inviting even as it examines how people turn their experiences into stories—and how those stories can change depending on who is telling them.

Friendship Is the Real Love Story

Although breakups, hookups and sexual attraction all play important roles in the film, the relationship at its center is the friendship between Demosthenes and Nikitas.

The two men tease, challenge and occasionally frustrate each other. Their conversations have the comfortable rhythm of a friendship built over many years. They know each other’s habits, insecurities and contradictions, even if they do not always agree on what those qualities mean.

Their attempt to write a screenplay gradually becomes a way of examining their own lives. What begins as Demosthenes’ story slowly reveals itself to be something shared between them.

That focus helps distinguish The Summer With Carmen from more conventional gay romantic comedies. It recognizes that friendships can be just as complicated, transformative and emotionally significant as romantic relationships.

The Summer With Carmen explores friendship, desire and queer life in Athens

Sexy, Playful and Unapologetically Queer

The Summer With Carmen embraces gay life without apology. Its characters flirt, cruise, argue, have sex, make mistakes and enjoy each other’s company beneath the Greek sun.

The film contains strong sexual content and abundant male nudity, but its eroticism feels connected to its larger portrait of queer life in Athens. The beach is simultaneously a place to relax, socialize, find inspiration and pursue desire.

Viewers who enjoy the film’s more sensual side can also explore Dekkoo’s guide to steamy gay movies.

Rather than presenting its gay characters through tragedy or trauma, the film allows them to be funny, vain, affectionate, confused and imperfect. Their queerness is not a problem to be solved. It is simply part of the world they inhabit.

That makes the film a particularly welcome addition to the growing selection of international gay movies available to discover on Dekkoo.

And Then There’s Carmen

Despite the movie’s plentiful human eye candy, Carmen may be its most irresistible performer.

The tiny rescue dog becomes the emotional link between Demosthenes and Panos after their breakup. Each man’s relationship with her reveals something about his capacity for responsibility, attachment and love.

Carmen also gives the characters a ready-made movie premise. She becomes a symbol, a plot device and an adorable source of chaos—all while remaining blissfully unaware that an entire screenplay is being constructed around her.

Where to Watch The Summer With Carmen

With its crystal-blue water, colorful characters and playful approach to gay storytelling, The Summer With Carmen is an ideal choice for viewers looking for something sexy, funny and refreshingly different.

It’s a celebration of gay friendship, creative ambition and the stories we tell ourselves about our lives. It also proves that sometimes the most memorable summer romance is not a romance at all.

Accidental Friends: The Gay Romantic Comedy About Finding Connection Where You Least Expect It

Sometimes the person who challenges you the most is exactly the person you need in your life.

Accidental Friends, now streaming exclusively on Dekkoo, is a funny, warmhearted Italian gay comedy about two men who couldn’t be more different — and the unexpected bond that develops when circumstances force them to live under the same roof.

Originally released in Italy as Amici per caso, the film comes from director Max Nardari and stars Filippo Contri and Filippo Tirabassi as Pietro and Omero, unlikely roommates whose relationship begins with conflict but gradually becomes something neither of them expected.

Two Roommates. Two Very Different Worlds.

Pietro and Omero aren’t exactly a natural match.

Pietro is a rough-around-the-edges Roman mechanic whose attitudes toward gay men leave a lot to be desired. Omero is openly gay, confident in who he is, and not particularly interested in making himself smaller to accommodate someone else’s prejudices.

When the two wind up sharing an apartment, their differences quickly collide.

What begins as an uneasy living arrangement filled with arguments, misunderstandings and plenty of culture shock gradually forces both men to reconsider the assumptions they’ve made about one another.

And somewhere along the way, something unexpected happens: they become friends.

A Gay Comedy About More Than Romance

What makes Accidental Friends stand out is that it doesn’t tell the most obvious version of this story.

At its heart, this is a film about male friendship, masculinity, prejudice and the connections that can develop when people allow themselves to see beyond labels.

Omero isn’t simply there to teach Pietro a lesson. Both men bring their own complications to the relationship, and both have something to learn from the strange new friendship they’ve stumbled into.

The result is a gay comedy that can be genuinely funny while still exploring how attitudes toward sexuality and masculinity shape the way men relate to one another.

For viewers who love character-driven LGBTQ+ stories with humor and heart, it’s an easy addition to the watchlist.

Meet Pietro and Omero

Filippo Contri stars as Pietro, whose macho exterior and ingrained prejudices make sharing an apartment with an openly gay man something of a personal crisis.

Opposite him is Filippo Tirabassi as Omero, who refuses to apologize for being himself — even when his new roommate would probably prefer that he did.

Their chemistry drives the film. The pleasure of Accidental Friends comes from watching the walls between them slowly come down as irritation gives way to understanding, affection and an unexpected kind of intimacy.
