New this week on Dekkoo – 3/31/17

In the summer of 1996, four teenage friends go on a camping trip in a remote area of Argentina. Once there, sexual tensions quickly simmer to the surface and the line between friendship and love begins to fade. What began as a simple getaway is quickly tinged with sex, romance and conflict as everyone if forced to confront their deepest feelings and hidden desires. ‘Bromance‘ is now available.

A landmark piece of cinematic history, ‘A Very Natural Thing‘ was the first commercially distributed film directed by an openly gay man. Very affirming, the film tells the story of a former priest who moves to NYC to find romance, with a man.

In the hypnotic animated short ‘Cruise Patrol‘, a routine drive down a long and dusty road takes a turn towards the strange.

In ‘Surprise, Surprise‘ closeted TV star and his recently disabled, much younger lover find the older man has a troubled, streetwise, 15-year-old homophobic son he never knew existed to add to their already strained household.

Is anyone else feeling a little dark these days? Is it just me? I’ve been thinking a lot about Marcal Fores’ film ‘Everlasting Love‘ lately and if you haven’t seen it and you’re in the mood for a sexy film involving intergenerational relationships and weird Spanish kids that take heartbreak a little too seriously keep reading!

I’ll set the scene for you: Dusk is still an hour or so away. You’re in a forest in the Northeastern area of Spain where various men and women are cruising for love and sex, but mostly sex. An older stud, Carlos, prowls the forest looking for his next trick, but instead happens upon one of his students, Toni. He doesn’t want to lose his job, but he also appears to have a voracious appetite for sexual pleasures and decides to have sex with Toni in his car (an incredible 4-minute sex scene taken in one continuous zoom
shot). I don’t really want to say what happens next, but I will say that I won’t mess with a group of Spanish youth ever!

Marcal Fores is a truly fantastic director and his first feature film ‘Animals’ (which you’ll be seeing soon on Dekkoo) also has a very similar surreal feeling. Marcal, like many young directors, puts a lot of emphasis on music in his films and in ‘Everlasting Love‘ he finds some very creepy tracks to put you on edge while at the same time keeping an humorous sensibility (especially in the end credits). I also really appreciate the honest nature of cruising in the film combining the reality of the endless hunt for sex (you can’t get lucky every time) with the fantastical element of women also being in the woods (a joke made early on in the film ‘Stranger by the Lake’ which many people compare to ‘Everlasting Love‘).

Combining sexiness, art-house techniques, horror elements, and honest-to-god romance, ‘Everlasting Love‘ is a 69-minute trip that you won’t soon forget!

Today, Dekkoo presents ‘Dropping the Soap‘. A hilarious 10 episode TV series that presents a highly satirical view of what goes on behind the scenes of filming the ‘hit’ soap opera Collided Lives.

I literally could not stop watching episode after episode of this series once I started. Talk about a binge! The episodes leave you hungry for more of what hi-jinks the main character Julian Draker (Paul Witten – also a co-writer of the show) will get himself into.

After ratings begin to plummet on the long-running soap, Olivia Vanderstein (played with surgical precision by the always formidable Jane Lynch) steps in to take over the management of the show. At the beginning of each episode we get a taste of what audiences see watching the TV show and then immediately get thrown into the chaos of the lives of the cast and crew. Now we don’t really want to give anything away, but this is a gay channel and so let’s just throw it out there that the show does get quite gay as it goes along.

There are so many fantastic cameos that kept me jumping on my couch with joy. John Michael Higgins (Best in Show) plays a depressed commercial director, Diedrich Bader (Veep) plays an old flame of Julian’s, and even Ben Bauer (Hunting Season, Shirtless Dudes Book Club) gets a fun role as one of Olivia’s incredibly disposable personal assistants. Throw that in with hilariously offensive jokes that poke fun at everything and everyone and more than a few bare-chested hotties and I was hooked!

Guys, you really need to drop what your doing and binge ‘Dropping the Soap‘ right now!

‘Queer As Folk’ is now available on Dekkoo!

We’re thrilled to announce the original two seasons of ‘Queer As Folk‘ are now available in the Dekkoo library

This UK series originally aired between 1999 and 2000. It starred Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire) and a young, baby-faced Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy). The show was such a success that it went on to inspire the American remake. However, many feel the original was the better of the two and we tend to agree. The series follows a colorful and lively group of friends at the heart of Manchester’s gay club scene as they forge their ways in a straight world.

Considered controversial due to the sexual relationship between 29-year old Stuart (Aiden Gillen) and 15-year old Nathan (Charlie Hunnam), ‘Queer As Folk‘ remains a truly ground-breaking gay series.

‘Queer As Folk’ is available to binge-watch now on Dekkoo!

Bend over daytime, ‘Dropping the Soap’ arrives March 7.

We are proud to announce that on March 7, a truly gut-busting 10-part series starring Paul Witten and Jane Lynch will debut on Dekkoo.

Dropping the Soap‘ goes behind-the-scenes of the long-running (awful) soap-opera “Collided Lives:. As the program struggles to stay afloat, a new Executive Producer named Olivia Vanderstein (played by the always hilarious Jane Lynch) shows up to shake things up. While the cast and crew desperately try to hold things together, Julian Drake (the soap’s leading man of “questionable talent and moral compass”) struggles to keep his personal life private and his cast members employed.

This is a show that we can not wait to share with you. All episodes will be available March 7. In the meantime, click on the link below to check out the trailer.

DEKKOO DISPATCH 009 – ‘BORN THIS WAY’

Title – ‘Born This Way

Director – Shaun Kadlec, Deb Tullmann

Release Date – June 21, 2013

I really love it when there’s a queer documentary I’ve never heard of that can blow me away with it’s absolutely universal message of the importance of acceptance from places I’m completely unfamiliar with, like Cameroon. I didn’t even know where Cameroon was in Africa before watching this doc (FYI it’s on the west coast just to the east of Nigeria). ‘Born This Way‘ premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and continued on to win Best
Documentary at Outfest Los Angeles back in 2013.

In Cameroon it’s still completely illegal to be ‘out and proud’. In fact it’s illegal to even be ‘out’. Same-sex sexual activity is punishable by either a fine and 5 years imprisonment and what’s even worse is that vigilante execution is technically allowed by law. Cameroon also boasts the scary statistic of the most arrests related to homosexuality than any other country in the world! Of course even though the situation is extremely grim, there’s a ray of light; Alternatives, the first LGBT center in Cameroon. Though many of the chosen subjects have to convey their stories in shadows or with blurred
faces you’ll still feel the power of their stories of persecution and their hopes for the future.

Also a plus: this doc is only 55 minutes, so your time will be well spent!

‘Born This Way’ is now available to watch on Dekkoo!
