The sexy 2006 gay indie romance Sun Kissed is now available on Dekkoo!

Teddy (John Ort) is a budding novelist who has traded the big city for his professor’s desert home in California to work on completing his first novel. Once there, he meets Leo (Gregory Marcel), the estate’s handsome young caretaker – who soon shows Teddy the ropes of living in the arid wilderness.

Teddy is instantly smitten by Leo’s sexy and casual demeanor, but after he seduces the caretaker one night, he begins to expose a series of layers that seem to conceal the real Leo. Was Leo once married? Did his wife die under mysterious circumstances? And what is the true nature of his relationship with Crispin (George Stoll), the gay gentleman who owns and controls the desert house where the two young men frolic?

Originally released in 2006, writer-director Patrick McGuinn’s Sun Kissed is a deeply sexy and largely overlooked romantic gay drama with a distinctly indie spirit. The film has been given a new polish for the digital age.

Short Film Spotlight: High Tide

Writer-director Claire Zhou packs her new 22-minute short film High Tide with low-simmering tension – using minimal dialog and two strong lead actors to tell a story of one man’s burgeoning sexual awakening.

Looking to escape the pain and confusion of an impending divorce, Tarik (Mouad Ben-Chaib) rents a remote cottage in a lush forest in the Netherlands. When he discovers a problem with his shower, he enlists the help of Jonas (Joshua Albano), the cottage’s attractive young owner.

The two men soon realize they have a lot in common. Their encounter awakens long suppressed feelings within Tarik – allowing him to explore his hidden desires and embark upon a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Bringing Him Back is an erotic character drama about loss, love and human connection

A deeply affecting film about loss, love and human connection, writer-director Borja de la Vega’s Bringing Him Back (also known as Mia y Moi) is a rich character drama with a surprisingly erotic sting in its tail.

Moi (Ricardo Gómez) travels with his boyfriend, Biel (Eneko Sagardoy), to his family home after the death of his mother. Despite arriving to the warm embrace of his sister (Bruna Cusí), Moi struggles to come to terms with his new reality- manifesting in a new disconnect with Biel. When his sister’s boyfriend (Joe Manjon) surprises everyone with his unannounced arrival, their delicate seclusion is shattered – replaced by a potently sensual and tense mood.

While it’s certainly not advisable to set sail on a cruise ship during a pandemic, this colorful and wildly entertaining documentary invites you aboard from the safe comfort of your home.

Once a year, during normal times, the “Dream Boat” sets sail for a cruise exclusively for gay men – where most passengers, from all corners of the world, are united by the wish to live life authentically as themselves in a protected place. The men have seven days to enjoy their freedom and to love openly. But also on board are their personal stories, their doubts and uncertainties.

Dipankar from India escaped an arranged marriage and now throws himself into action to find the man of his dreams; Ramzi was persecuted by the police in Palestine for being gay and had to start a new life in Europe; Frenchman Philippe was let down by his family when he was bound to a wheelchair, but found a new family with his partner; Martin from Austria enjoys the hedonism and abundant choice of men on the ship and gives his perspective on how to deal with HIV today; and Marek from Poland has everything he needs to stand out on the men’s market, thanks to his trained body.

Marilyn is a powerful coming-of-age drama based on a true story

With an affection for women’s dresses and a naturally sensitive demeanor, Marcos (Walter Rodriguez) knows he was not made for a life as a tenant rancher – tending livestock and fending off poachers in the beautiful, unforgiving Argentinian countryside.

Starved for connection and finding release just once a year during carnival, Marcos has an unexpected ally in his kindly father Carlos (German de Silva), who pushes his son toward education and a future outside their small, provincial town. But when Carlos dies suddenly, responsibility quickly falls on Marcos and his older brother Carlitos (Ignacio Gimenez) to assume their father’s role, learning the trade, keeping the troubled ranch afloat-and placating their stern, demanding mother Olga (Catalina Saavedra).

With financial and social pressures mounting, Marcos finds a ray of light in a budding relationship with Federico (Andrew Bargsted) yet finds himself unable to escape forces keeping him from being the person he was meant to be, leading to an unforgettable conclusion in this powerful debut feature from co-writer/director Martin Rodriguez Redondo, based on the incredible true story.

Short Film Spotlight: Plantonic

A wildly inventive short film romance, Plantonic follows the unique relationship that grows (literally) between a young aspiring artist and the incredibly attractive half-man/half-plant that seems to have grown from a garden.

Originally from Bangkok, writer-director Krit Komkrichwarakool earned a degree in Communication Design, then moved to Canada to pursue a career in film. Integrating his knowledge of design with his approach to filmmaking, Krit brings a unique point of view to his storytelling.

His short film Freefall won “Best Director” at Moscow Shorts and was nominated for “Best Short Film” at the 2018 Leo Awards. Plantonic, recently premiered at Inside Out and won “Outstanding Short Film” at the Reelworld Film Festival and “Best Screenplay” at the Vancouver Short Film Festival.

“Film is a great medium to explore the reflections of our own existence, and the ultimate question of why each of us is here. It is why I do what I do. To speak with my own subconscious. To find a trace of the answers that connect us all,” said Komkrichwarakool.

Now Available: Truth

In the vein of Misery and Fatal Attraction, writer-director-star Rob Moretti’s Truth is a psychological thriller about an innocent love affair that goes wildly off the rails. Sean Paul Lockhart (known in the adult film world as Brent Corrigan) co-stars alongside Moretti in a role that perfectly highlights his acting chops.

Truth opens with an imprisoned man – befuddled, but claiming innocence – who is being interviewed by a therapist. Soon, the story of how he got there unfolds. A chance internet encounter brings the cute, affable Caleb (Lockhart) and the hunky, older Jeremy (Moretti) together. Jeremy seduces the vulnerable young man with compliments, attention and above all, the promise of a secure and loving relationship.

Caleb, mentally abused as a child by his emotionally erratic mother and now wary of relationships in general, succumbs to Jeremy’s advances and a sensual affair begins. But beneath Caleb’s shy smile and innocent eyes lies a troubled young man – and Jeremy harbors his own dark secrets and lies which, together, threaten the relationship. This budding romance soon triggers an unexpected chain of events as trust is violated, tempers unleashed and the destructive side of love takes over.

Lockhart is terrific in a demanding role that exposes the hidden demons buried deep inside each and every one of us.

The New Queer Cinema Classic Poison is Now Available on Dekkoo!

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, Poison was the second feature directed by Todd Haynes – the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Far from Heaven, Velvet Goldmine and Carol.

This groundbreaking American Indie was the most fervently debated film of the early 1990s and a trailblazing landmark of queer cinema. A work of immense visual invention, Haynes’ spectacular follow-up to his legendary Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story is audacious, disturbing and thrillingly cinematic.

Inspired by the writings of Jean Genet, Poison deftly interweaves trio of transgressive tales – “Hero,” “Horror” and “Homo” – that build toward a devastating climax.

“Hero,” shot in mock TV-documentary style, tells a bizarre story of suburban patricide and a miraculous flight from justice; “Horror,” filmed like a delirious ’50s B-movie melodrama, is a gothic tale of a mad sex experiment which unleashes a disfiguring plague; while “Homo” explores the obsessive sexual relationship between two prison inmates.

A runaway hit which made national headlines when it was attacked by right-wing figures including Dick Armey, Ralph Reed and minister Donald Wildmon, Poison is unsettling, unforgettable and thoroughly entertaining.

Short Film Spotlight: Holiday

The new 20-minute short film Holiday follows twenty-something Maurice (Tijmen Govaerts) and his older brother Louis (Oscar Willems), who join the rest of their family for a weekend getaway filled with unexpected tension.

No longer a kid, but not quite an adult, Maurice is having trouble finding his place. He’s also starting to notice how much of a gap has grown between the generations.

Fueled by angst and growing more and more frustrated by his family’s myriad secrets, he starts adding a certain level of tension to each relationship, forcing a breaking point that his well-mannered relatives refuse to cross, no matter how awkward things get.

A sharp, well-observed comedy-drama from Belgian writer-director Michiel Dhont, Holiday teases at deep emotion hidden just under the surface. Watching the short film, it’s easy to imagine it expanded to feature length, delving further into each of the characters. Nonetheless, the game cast lend naturalistic performances that make the family feel authentic and relatable.
